I am a registered Filemaker II user considering Claris' $89 upgrade offer to Filemaker Pro II. Some years ago when I used Filemaker II some, it seemed that its document files were extraordinarily large compared with Panorama. Since my HD space is at a premium, it would be helpful to know if Claris has done anything about this with Filemaker Pro I or II? Just to clear up a small nit, it's FileMaker Pro 1.0 and FileMaker
Pro 2.0, Claris has dropped the whole II thing and moved up to the Pro
designation with seemingly normal version numbers.
As for FM Pro's file size, they can get quite large, especially if
you have a lot of Text fields. FM Pro blocks out all 32000 characters of
space for every text field in each new record. Fortunately you can get
around this by using FM Pro's Save as Compressed Copy feature. It works
quite well and will generally clear up 10-50% depending on how many
changes have been made to your database file since the last Compressed
Save was done. I use this about once a month on our large FM Pro files.

Egads, you should be using FileMaker Pro 1.0 already! It's much better than FileMaker II (which is unsupported, by the way). THe files can get a bit large, but you can save compressed copies every once and a while. You also can't compare FileMaker Pro to Panorama since Panorama is a RAM-resident database. In other words, it's cool, but it has some serious limitations that FM doesn't. Another reason why FM files are so big are from the indexing. Panorama just doesnt index as much as FM (which is not a minus). I suggest that you get away from FileMaker II as soon as possible and run out and get FM Pro 2.0 as soon as it hits the stores. It looks _really_ cool. -- mlb In article <1992Sep3.093407.545@lester.appstate.edu>, WHITESR@APPSTATE.EDU (Steve White) wrote: > > I am a registered Filemaker II user considering Claris' $89 > upgrade offer to Filemaker Pro II.
