Can anyone please advise whether there is a good labelling prog available for Macs? Something like the Avery prog for PCs. Cheers Mac Roin

However, one of the neatest little items I picked up is the Smart Label Printer PRO made by Seiko. Look into it and see if it will meet your needs. You can print 1 label or a list. -- k -- "I think, Pooh," said Christopher Robin, "that we ought to eat all of our provisions, so that we have less to carry."

My wife uses: MacEnvelope from Synex:
1 (800) 447-9639
www.snx.com
It's a great program but as of 23 Oct 97 there was a little bit of a
problem with the installer and OS8, so you do it manually. They probably
have fixed it by now. It has a whole library of templates for stand alone
operation. The original version got 5 mice from MacUser in Aug 90.

MS Word has reasonable labels for one offs or for printing a page of the same label. Look under the tools menu - all of the Avery label sizes should be there. MS Word has default settings for Avrey labels. Look under tools > envelops and labels. On your box of Avery labels it will tell you which label to select from the list in the word program. It will then tell you how to set up the margins. You can then use mail merge or type the labels in directly and print them out. My $.02

This is a copy of the reply I received from Avery (USA) from an E-mail I
sent to them. Perhaps you could ring Avery Australia and quote the product
number to get more info.
Note: The price and phone number below are USA. The price seems cheap
enough even if it is in $US.
Hope this has been of some help.

Judith, I have been watching this posted question with considerable interest but have not as yet seen the answers which would satisfy "my" particular requirements. Let me briefly summarise the issue. Those who require a mass laser-labelling facility can find it integrated within ClarisWorks or FileMaker. But those built-in label formats serve only those markets which use the US Letter page. The global standard is the metricated A4 page - so if you are not in the good ol' US of A, you are burdened with workarounds whereby to compensate for margins and drop-register corruptions. The isolation of USA in clinging to the imperial measurement system, has produced nothing but problems in myriad commercial and industrial export markets. The customer has to decide whether he shall be the loser or whether he shall beat the American tunnel vision by buying from elsewhere (which in terms of imperial v metrication, means from anywhere else on the globe!) For instance. In many business presentations it is absolutely necessary to deliver unfolded documents. And yet the infeed width dimensions of all personal laser printers such as Apple, Hewlett Packark - et al, are just 1.5mm too narrow to accommodate a manilla envelope for A4 pages. So in this high-tech' age our options are (i) the quill pen or ballpoint, (ii) an expensive commercial laser-printer, or, (iii) use of a laser label. For the latter requirement one should not have to open a huge Application. We need only a Desk Accessory (Apple Menu item) Laser-labelling Utility which works with the current Mac OS and which supports the global metricated page formats. Having followed this ng thread, I emailed Avery, put these criteria, and asked the questions. Their prompt and courteous response can be summarised as "No. No. and No" To any Shareware wizards and software developers who may be reading this, I say, "here is market just waiting for your skills and enterprise". Actually, I think that the problem does not reside in Americans sticking to their format....If it was really such a concern, we would switch to their format anyway...The problem only seems to lie in the fact that there isn't any demand for what you're asking or some enterprising shareware producer would have made it. There are plenty of talented developers in australia and I haven't seen one such program you describe...You could always commission a developer to make one for you for AU$500-$700 and you get the source code. Then you could try and distribute it and get your money back....I don't think you'd have many takers to be perfectly honest... As for buying anywhere else on the globe, that is always an option but I look around the globe and I don't see anyone else making an a4 based labelling utility... Don't blame the yanks....blame all those people who are making the software around the rest of the globe who are trying to sell to the yanks... Good Luck, Dennis Stuart Willis wrote in message <35AB5179.151676ED@uq.net.au>... >Judith Bassin wrote: > >> How about MacLabel from Avery? Hm, I don't quite see the problem (might be my fault, though <s>). If you have a laser printer -- a standard printer as opposed to dedicated label printers -- , all you need is an A4 sheet with labels in the desired size. Don't know if those sheets are difficult to get in Australia; over here (Germany) you would have a hard time finding anything else but A4 ... Then, in FileMaker, either select the label size from the pop-up menu or, if "your" label size is not included, create a custom size. Maybe it's a question of localization whether your copy of FMPro supports any A4 sheets by default or not. I have FM Pro 3.0 German, and it does support several label sizes (makes are Avery and Zweckform, I think) on A4 sheets. Another option, interesting if you want to print on labels in different sizes, might be the Aetiket Label Printer <http://www.mrdata.com/fandrich/eric/aetiket/intro.htm>. Christian
