MENLO PARK, Calif. October 3, 1995 -- inTouch Technologies announced today that JPEG Transmogrifier, the first ever Macintosh utility for the Macintosh to create progressive JPEGs, is now available. Progressive JPEGs are the latest file format to be supported widely by World Wide Web browsers. Progressive JPEGs feature slightly smaller file size than baseline JPEGs as well as interlaced display. Up until today, tools for generating progressive JPEGs have largely been developed for unix platforms. With JPEG Transmogrifier, however, the world of progressive JPEGs has finally arrived for Macintosh developers and users. With a simple user interface, users of the JPEG Transmogrifier can easily convert PICTs, GIFs, and baseline JPEGs to progressive JPEG format. The Transmogrifier creates baseline JPEGs as well. The 1.0b1 release of the software is currently available at http://www.in-touch.com/pjpeg.html. This beta release expires on December 1, 1995. Subsequent to that date, JPEG Transmogrifier will be available as shareware for $11.99. inTouch Technologies is an internet, database, and telephony consulting and software development company with offices in Boston and San Francisco. All inquiries should be addressed to gyld@in-touch.com, or to inTouch Technologies 1130 Sherman Avenue Menlo Park, CA 94025 (c) 1995, inTouch Technologies. inTouch Technologies, the inTouch logo, and JPEG Transmogrifier are all property of inTouch Technology Corp.

Will it also convert progressive JPEGs to normal JPEGs?

Do they have anything like that for PC Windows? On 5 Nov 1995 04:01:58 GMT, gyld@in-touch.com (Dan Gildor) wrote: >In article <gberigan-0411951630420001@abel-gberigan.unl.edu> >gberigan@cse.unl.edu (Greg Berigan) writes: > >> Will it also convert progressive JPEGs to normal JPEGs? > >Yes.

As it says on the Web page whose URL they gave in the original post,
"PC versions of the transmogrifier will also shortly be available."

I _will not_ make nasty remarks about the reading abilities of PC
users. I _will not_ make nasty remarks.... ;-)

I would just like to point out that Netscape 2.0b1 is a bug-riddled disaster that very likely will not be cleared up until well after that date. Not very many people are going to be taking advantage of progressive JPEGs if there is no currently available browser that can display them, and not eat the contents of the hard drive at the same time. I'd suggest moving your cutoff date back a bit. James Hastings-Trew System Administrator Mister Print Productions Ltd., Saskatoon, SK, Canada

Just to let you know.

I don't know about the PC version, but Mac 2.0b2 works OK (for a beta), as long as you don't let its amazing memory leak fill its Get Info allocation. I give it 15 MB, open About This Macintosh, and keep an eye on the RAM bar. WIth that much RAM to play in, it'll last for a couple of hours. When it hits 90% or so, it's time to quit and relaunch Netscape. Otherwise...kaBOOM! ON the other hand, I haven't been able to use b2 for more than 5 seconds
without it crashing my machine, no matter what I do.
