The best  adapters  I know of that will connect to an Ethernet Card on
MAC or IBM  are  the Ascend Pipeline series. For the single or small
network user , the Pipeline 25 would be the best choice. With it's
fairly low price ($699.- street), POTS interface, throughput up to 128
Kbps, and upgrade options (to router and IP compression) I think it's
a pretty nifty unit.
BTW, I have no affiliation with Ascend whatsoever, but have been doing
a lot of research on the subject for clients. Check out Ascend's
homepage (www.ascend.com).  You also might want to take a look at the
