The SLIP service seems to work well with all my TCP apps except for CUSEEME. For lack of a better phrase, the mac seems to "Pause" alot of the time when it's running meaning that nothing can be clicked, no drop down menus, no task switches, etc. Then, suddenly I get a flood of activity from the modem and thing bounce along very nicely for a while (about 3 minutes) then I get another "pause." It renders the software unusable. I'm running system 7.5.2 with MACtcp 2.0.6 interslip 1.0.1 on a 8/500 PB 5300cs (100 Mhz ppc). When I connect via localtalk to the net on a T1 line all is fine so I sure the machine itself has the horsepower to do cuseeme, but it seems to be very hamstringed over the modem. I know lots of ppl who do cuseeme over 14.4 and 28.8 modems on macs, and it's fine. Any suggestions ? I've tapped out all my knowledge. The interslip connection itself is working fine with all the apps I've tried save for cuseeme and videophone. Thanks in advance oh TCP mavins. --JP -- -- Regards, Jack Pollard, private citizen jpollard@husc.harvard.edu "Practice Random Kindness"

The machine is not the problem - its the connection. CUSeeMe will work over a modem 14.4 and 28.8 well if it is e perfect connection. On my phone lines even with a good 28.8 modem i am only connecting at 19.2. The few times i connect near 28.8 CUSeeMe works great. james In article <47r1gn$91k@decaxp.harvard.edu>, jpollard@scws28.harvard.edu (Jack Pollard) wrote: > The SLIP service seems to work well with all my TCP apps except for > CUSEEME. The problem is the audio bandwidth. Until someone comes up with a better audio compressor, you need at least 16kb to get minimal audio, and you just can't hose that through a 14.4 dialup. 0.83b3 is just out and has MUCH improved audio handling (but it'll freeze the video when someone's talking, even over a fast direct hookup). We need about a factor of 4 improvement in general bandwidth to really make this tecnology work. Then, of course, everyone'll want color. 8-} Chris --------------------------------------------------------------------- Christopher S.
