We've struck a bit of an odd one ... Our school has just purchased an Astra 610S scanner, but try as we might we cannot get our G3 desktop Mac to recognise it. A friend had had similar problems with his UMAX Vista on his 8500, and we got it working by installing the UMAX drivers from OmniPage 8 and reselecting the new driver from the chooser. Alas, this trick doesn't seem to work with the G3 (running OS 8.1). Any suggestions, kind net.wizards? Geoffrey

It worked fine with a Dos machine with a SCSI card. Umax tech support suggested the cable may be faulty - so I swapped the SCSI cable with one from an older scanner - and hey presto it worked (and the Astra scanner cable worked with the older scanner too!) Have you tried setting a different SCSI number for the scanner. At the back of the scanner trun the SCSI number to a different setting. I have a Astra 1220S with a G3 and it conflicted with the HD, until I changed the SCSI numbers. Launching VISTA-SCAN should them auto. mount the scanner. Hope this helps Geoffrey Peters wrote: > We've struck a bit of an odd one ... > > Our school has just purchased an Astra 610S scanner, but try as we might > we cannot get our G3 desktop Mac to recognise it. > > A friend had had similar problems with his UMAX Vista on his 8500, and > we got it working by installing the UMAX drivers from OmniPage 8 and > reselecting the new driver from the chooser. Just a generic SCSI tip, use SCSI Probe to find out if the scanner is seen on the SCSI bus. If you see it, then there is probably something not right with the software. If you don't see it, probably the cable or some other hardware. Not necessarily related (unless you have multiple devices in your SCSI chain), but I have an 600s, and it was just about useless unless it was the only device connected. I'm not sure how I stumbled across it, but the following link: http://www.chipmunk.nl/astraterminator.html held the solution to my problem. By Default 'termination power' is not enabled (one of the pins on the scsi cable carries power which is used by the terminator). There is a quick mod (described step-by-step) you can do to fix this; it involves changing a jumper on the scanner motherboard. I realise that this is a warranty-voiding operation, but I was so exasperated by the lack of system stability with the scanner connected that I did the mod, and the scanner has been flawless since. anyway, FWIW, it may or may not be relevant to the 610s. cheers, Hugh ps. to reply, remove the second "w" in highbroww
