More heads up: Carbon 1.2.5 GM + new Universal Headers 3.4 vs CW Pro 6.1

Apple has released Carbon 1.2.5 GM SDK and it includes new Universal
Headers (3.4).

Let's assume you want to begin using these new headers. So one thing you
will likely do is replace the present Universal Headers folder in CW
with the new ones from Apple.

Then you'd better rebuild your various libraries and projects.
You will have trouble because there are code changes needed in at least
the following:

MSL SIOUX Carbon, PowerPlant Carbon.

I havn't checked further than this but there are probably others as well.

One of the reasons is that Apple has changed the AppleEvents.h header by
removing 6 or so #defines for some UPP's used prior to Carbon 1.2.5.

I have sent an example SIOUX project demonstrating this to the
indefatigable MWRon.

But it is trivial to reproduce as follows; e.g. for PowerPlant create a
new Carbon Project, add a System access path to the new Universal
Headers in the 1.2.5 Carbon Lib SDK and do an update.

You'll see the compiler errors.

So clearly MW will need to give this some attention and it dosn't look
to be a very onerous task (just 6 errors). Maybe Greg Dow has already
done it for PP?

Hopefully they can get to it soon because we want to use the new
Universal Headers now with Carbon 1.2.5 GM don't we?

Or did I miss something here?

respect....

Peter

As far as I know there is no need to rebuild MSL libraries. PowerPlant -
yes, you need to modify it. Check article titled "Re: CarbonLib 1.2.5f2
breaks Powerplant??", posted to <comp.sys.mac.programmer.codewarrior>
02/06/01 (mm/dd/yy) or e-mail me privately and I will send you detailed
instructions how to modify PP 2.1.

Tom

The same deleted #defines for the UPP's are used in the MSL SIOUX Carbon
to setup the AE Handlers.

Of course one can just re-insert them. But maybe there's a better way.
They must have been removed for a (sensible?) reason right?

They were just renamed: Proc -> UPP (NewAEEventHandlerProc becomes
NewAEEventHandlerUPP, etc).
These are not functional changes, that is why I think that there is no need
to rebuild the libs.

If you want to use PowerPlant with the UH 3.4 headers below is what you
need to do.

>Or did I miss something here?

You missed something, you do not need to rebuild SIOUX.carbon.lib it
does not use any new features of CarbonLib 1.2.5 so there is no need to
rebuild it. If you do need to rebuild it for your own custom use, you
need to correct the errors yourself.

PowerPlant and Universal Headers 3.4

Apple changed some things in UH 3.4 that causes compiler errors in PP from CW6.

* Type of third parameter to SendControlMessage() changed from SInt32 to void*
Typecast third param to (void*) in LAMControlImp.cp

* NewXXXProc routines unsupported. Must now use NewXXXUPP routines.
Change calls to NewQDTextProc to NewQDTextUPP
Change calls to NewQDTextMeasProc to NewQDTextMeasUPP
Change calls to NewAEEventHandlerProc to NewAEEventHandlerUPP

* Second parameter to LClick changed from short to EventModifiers
Remove typecast of second param to (SInt16) in LListBox.cp

There might be other incompatibilities, too. Usually, a quick comparison
of the old and new header files will indicate what needs to be changed.

Well, you have the source, you could just fix it in the meantime.
It's probably just a case of MW using some old routine names that
aren't supported any more. I managed to get MW 5 libraries (except
SIOUX) running with Carbon, surely just a few name changes wouldn't be
difficult.
