Is there a known problem with this, or anyone else with similar
problems?

For some reason, the combo drive in my iBook Dual USB 500 (Toshiba
SD-2002) has started refusing to acknowledge the presence of certain
CDs, giving the little kick that happens when the drive is shut empty,
then stopping. The drive can then be ejected as if it were empty.

I've traced to problem to occur with discs that have clear plastic
around the centre hub. Those that are painted around the centre hub are
usually not a problem, although sometimes they do show the same problem,
which is fixed temporarily by giving the combo drive lens a little wipe
with a soft cloth.

I hope I get time to take this machine back to Apple for a fix in the
coming weeks, but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this, or knows
any fix other than going without the machine for several weeks.
