There is a "problem" with certain audio CD (new from sony and others) that
have a copyprotection that causes hem to be impossible to be read in 
non-audio only drives. These have a thin reflective area near the 
outside edge and the nomal audio in the middle. Do a search for
"copyprotection audio cd sony" if this sounds like the problem.

Did the drive ever acknowledge the disks or have they always been 
unreadable?
