I suggest that you have a Apple Service provider check the ribbon cable
that connects the screen to the powerbook. I just had to have mine
replaced on my 5300c. The cable is folded in the middle of the screen
section to make a turn, and after about 2 years mine gave out. I took the
machine apart to see if it was a loose connecter, and by flexing the cable
I made it fail complelely. All and all if its that it's not too expensive
a fix (cost me $125.00, the cable is about $70.00), and get several
problems fixed. (Brightnes and Contrast buttons didn't work, sound came
and went, screen went blank.
