Messy Setup on Mac Powerbook

Lots of questions, I'm afraid.

On a general level, does anyone know if there's any documentation on the
Net for the various System 7.5 accessories? We have a Mac Powerbook with
a Dayna Communicard Fax Modem and a Nokia DTP card, i.e. a mobile phone
modem. The machine was bought new but the accompanying documentation is
minimal.

GX OR NOT?

Our printer is an Apple Portable Stylewriter with a pre-GX printer
driver, and we send faxes via Fax Sender GX. Every time we want to use
the printer we have to disable Quickdraw GX, then re-enable it again to
send a fax. When Quickdraw GX is disabled, a message pops up on startup
saying that the installed fonts are designed for GX and we should delete
them and install standard ones. Once again, how to do this doesn't seem
to be documented - will we have only received GX fonts, or are some of
them standard Truetype/Type 1 fonts? How do we tell the difference? Do
we really need Quickdraw GX on a laptop? We can't use it with our
present printer and if the fax facility didn't need it, I'd be inclined
to ditch it. Would I be better off getting a GX printer driver (assuming
one exists) and using Quickdraw GX for everything?

Lastly, how can we tell which of the numerous inits/extensions loaded by
default on this machine are really needed? It takes ages to boot up and
I'm sure some of them must be superfluous, but every time I remove one I
seem to get a message saying it's needed by some other service.

I'm pretty computer literate on Windows PCs and - against all rumour -
find the Mac setup more complicated.

Many thanks in advance for any help.
