I'm pretty sure that previous updates [as in, before the current OS X trend of hardcoding the path and name of applications began], MW updaters did 'find' the IDE by type/creator instead of a relative path/filename. Having used UpdaterVISE myself and the fact that CW currently is a non-bundled PEF application makes it pretty straightforward to 'fix' so that those of us that need to have multiple installations can tell them apart [not run them at the same time, but be able to easily launch the correct one]. Apple got raked over the coals about this for their OS X applications and they seem to be slowly fixing it for some of them...
