I have a problem with my PB520c with GV Mercury internal modem. When I start my PB and leave it for a while or when I'm using it, suddenly, Config PPP starts. Does anybody have this kind of problems? Please help me. Fritz HagiใSystem Administrator of NEWSNET ASIA 801A Sea View Estate 2-8 Watson Rd North Point Hong Kong Tel: (852)2802-6306 Fax: (852)2512-0617 WWW: http://www.hk.super.net/~fritzha/

I thought it might be related to the SNMP extensions, trying to report status or something, but it still happens after disabling them. My current guess is that a failed connection attempt gets put in a queue to retry later and somehow the "later" gets interpreted to mean several weeks later.

Oh yeah..I thought I was the only one with this problem. It does it on
both my desktop machine and my PB520c. One time I was going to the
bathroom at 3:00am and I heard my modem dialing...what the hell? :)
Almost every morning after my computer dialed it has a "Idle Timeout PPP"
dialog so it dials, connects then times out. It's really annoying..kinda
like it has a mind of it's own. It doesn't seem to be consistent. It
doesn't dial at any specific time, and sometimes it keeps dialing and
dialing after I say "QUIT" damn it "QUIT" until I just have to restart.
That bug would be painful if your ISP charged you by the hour!

No explanation. This problem seems fairly widespread, so has anyone got a real cure? BTW, make sure you set Config PPP to quiet mode, or it may hang on to a phone line until you respond to the alert box in the morning -- could be expensive! There's an application called MacPPP Timer, which, in addition to performing a useful service (keeping track of how long you're logged on), seems to perform an even "harder" close than the ConfigPPP "Hard Close" button. I'm at a loss to explain why this should be, but I had certain daemons that would re-dial even after I did a hard close. Since I started using MacPPP Timer, I've had no more problems. I'm not sure where it's available (I think I got it from a user group) but it's definitely worth looking for. --Art -- Boston Ska home page http://www.tiac.net/users/artc finger artc@artc.tiac.net for PGP public key

The only reliable fix is to close any connection you make with "Hard
Close" which disables the auto-dial feature of MacPPP. I haven't *heard*
of anyone who has switched to doing that still suffering these
spontaneous dial attempts.

Definately a bug in MacPPP.

That would explain it. From a casual look at MacPPP's (rather messy) source
code, it's conceivable that a close where MacPPP doesn't get to control the
process properly would not get treated as "hard".

Or at best a misfeature...

Tip of the Day: If colored areas on your worksheet do not print well,
choose Page Setup from the File menu, and then select the 'Black and
White' option on the Sheet tab.
- From the Microsoft Excel 5 TipWizard. I kid you not.
