This may not be the ultimate solution, but it may work for you while
you're waiting for someone to produce the ult. sol.

If you hold down the option key while changing applications, the
previous application will be hidden. I don't know about option-opening
an app - you can try it. But if you've got Finder and MacWrite open,
Finder in front, select MacWrite from the apps menu or click a MW window
while holding option. Finder goes away.
