ascii printer output

Is there any way to elicit ASCII-style output from the Mac? That is,
excluding the problems of physical interfacing, can I hook up a
standard PC-style dot-matrix (or other) printer? Obviously, no funky
fonts are needed. But we do have a neato-cool box that takes RS-232
serial dot-matrix output and prints it on an IBM Selectric typewriter
(for REAL LQ-output).

ANY help would be muchly appreciated.
