I am looking for a PD/Shareware HD defragmenter for the Mac which is
System 7 friendly. Does anyone know where I might find such. I have
been using SUM2, and have just found that it has been trashing my HD.

If there is no PD.. software available, does anyone have recommendations
re: commercial software eg. DiskExpress, NUM, others ?

Thanks

Jason

Speed Disk. It's included in the Norton Utilities package. It's the best

Speed Disk sucks... Ive trashed my hard drive on several occassions
with it. (The program crashed and i was running of the emergency disk
like I was supposed to) Since Speed Disk doesnt have an;y real error
checking my hard drive was trashed. Fortunatly Norton's hard drive
recovery program works ok or i would have been really mad. 2.0 does
not fix the problem, as a friend got it when he got his SyQuest, first
time running, crashed and fried his hard drive.

On the other hand, I whole heartedly recommend DiskExpress. Works
flawlessly... And even if your hard drive crashes, no problems. Never,
it cant.

I don't know of any PD/SW defragmenters, but I want to second the
recommendation of DiskExpress. There have been three cases where my Mac
crashed in the middle of a compact operation; when I rebooted, DE told
me what file it was working on and that that file just might be corrupt.
It has yet to have actually corrupted a file for me, however.

It's safe, AND effective.

But, SyQuest drives do have some what of a reputation of not being reliable, and fring often!!!

I've had very good luck with FileKnit from MicroCom. My company (FOCUS
Enhancements) ships it as part of a licensed software collection on it's hard
drive products. I guess it's available in stores.
