Does the drive "spin up"? ie can you hear it spinning? If no, you may
have a problem with STICTION (sp?). It occurs when there is hot/muggy/
humid weather. I'm not an expert techie or anything like that but
try tapping the drive lightly on the side. (AT OWN RISK). If the drive is
spinning--who knows what?

My avoidance solution would be to leave your computer on. Just power off
the monitor. The drive will continue to spin and remain free of dust and
other particles.

When it comes to the crunch, HD Utils don't cut it

Over the years I've seen a lot of whacky hard disk
problems and in my experience, if they're nasty the
usual symptom is "the hard disk isn't there". By and
large, all the hard disk gizmos around basically do
the same thing... check the SCSI chain using the
same commands and then try to mount anything they
see. Since a bad problem generally means they don't
see anything, they don't do you any good.

I have access to practically every utility program
for Macs ever seen (borrowing from friends and
contacts in a crisis) and it's pretty well always the
same story.

They'll recover an occasional lost file or fix errors
that you've never noticed, but when something serious
happens, you might as well use SCSI probe as Norton's.

Any comments?

Tonio

i agree that once something serious happens, not much will help out.
my solution to this is to use good software to format and drive my
hard disk. i had all sorts of trouble with silverlining and switched
to fwb's hard disk toolkit. no problems at all after that; works great
under a fair amount of duress...
