Problem recording, do I have a built-in microphone or I have to get an external one? Which one?

I just bought a PowerMac 7200 and discovered that the usual microphone was
not supplied.
Then I borrowed one from a friend, but still I could not record (I tried
Simpletext and Audioshop).
Does anyone know if there is a built-in microphone in my PowerMac? If yes,
where is it?
Here is the sound hardware info about my mac (from Techtool):
Sound:
Hardware has Stereo Capability
Stereo Mixing on External Speaker
Sound I/O Manager Present
Built-in Input Hardware Present
Input Device Available
Built-in Simultaneous Play & Record
Can Play and Record 16-bit Samples
Can Record Stereo
Input Port Requires Line Level
Play Double Buffer
Multiple Channel Support
16-bit Audio Data Supported
I tried to use CoolTalk (with no success), but the readme file says that I
should have a PlainTalk microphone. My microphone is just a simple plastic
round-shaped thing that was supplied with another PowerMac. I think it is
stereo.
Is that a PlainTalk microphone?
I also tried to record from SimpleText with no success.
If I go in the Control Panel, Sound, I can set the input source as either
External Microphone or Internal CD.
I am sure that the microphone is plugged in the right port.
Can anybody email me some hint? Do I need a new microphone or some setting
is wrong?
Thanks,
Max

You do need the Plaintalk mic - and no, the one you are using is not stereo and that is the problem. The mini jack for the mic you are using does not correctly match the stereo mic input jack on the 7200. ====================== In article <maxalex-ya023680000301970134310001@news.gol.com>, maxalex@gol.com (Max) wrote: > I just bought a PowerMac 7200 and discovered that the usual microphone was > not supplied. > Then I borrowed one from a friend, but still I could not record (I tried > Simpletext and Audioshop). > Does anyone know if there is a built-in microphone in my PowerMac? Yes, You need the Plaintalk mic, but it's because the PlainTalk mic has line-level output and contains an inbuilt amplifier. That means, that Your Mac has not a normal microphone-level input and needs much higher input voltage to get Your sound. You can use an ordinary mic only with some amplifier. For instance, if You can master the cords, You can connect Your mic to input of a cassette recorder and the line output of recorder to input of Mac. Or, better and less dangerous, You can buy a Plaintalk mic ($49?). _ _ _ Keith A Griffin <kgriffin@triode.net.au> wrote: > You do need the Plaintalk mic - and no, the one you are using is not > stereo and that is the problem.
