I'm having a great deal of trouble getting my Mac Performa 6115CD and US Robotics Sportster 28.8 to work with my PPP Internet account. Basically, I suppose I need to obtain the proper init string, but I don't even know if that's it. The computer came with a Global Village TelePort Gold II (14.4kbps) which connects and works fine. I recently bought the Sportster, but I can't seem to get a connection. The modem dials fine, and the host answers, and after the connect sounds the speaker goes silent, but the connection doesn't work properly. I can get the "CONNECT 28800" but then only garbage. Does anyone out there have a similar configuration? What did you do to make it work? Thanks a lot in advance, Steve Shankman (please email directly to shankman@net99.net) p.s. What fax software do you use?

I'm using my USR Sportster 28.8 on a PB540C and PowerMac 8100/100 with no problem. Here is the initiailization string I use. AT&F1&A3&B1&H1&R2 If your USR is new, there should be no problem. I did experience a problem with an older 28.8 I had because it was using the V.fast compression method, not the v.42. Hope this helps!

I usually dial in with the terminal emulator, using "ATDT", etc. The funny thing is that dialing straight out with the terminal emulator works fine, but using the init string "ATZ" *doesn't*. It seems like MacPPP has a bug with Sportster modems. >The computer came with a Global Village TelePort Gold II (14.4kbps) which >connects and works fine. My situation is quite similar. >p.s. What fax software do you use? Do you mean you're having fax problems too? I *hardly ever* can receive faxes with my Sportster 14.4! Sorry that I can't help. But it's comforting to know that you're not going crazy, isn't it? :-) Joe P.S. If anybody in this group has configured a Sportster, please email me too. -----------JM------------------- |JosephM@omni.voicenet.com | | | |************************* | |-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-|

I have a 14.4 courior that doesn't work with MacPPP, but Z-Term dials fine with it. So I use my internal GV PP Silver 9600, and that works fine. Maybe you should have gotten the mac specific edition: the Mac&FAx

According to the installation manual for my Sportser 28.8 the init string
AT&F1 should have the identical effect as AT&F1&A3&B1&H1&R2 since the
options &A3&B1&H1&R2 are all default settings for the &F1 (hardware flow
control) factory configuration. What I see missing from the init string
above is the option &D0 which overrides the normal DTR operation used in
the &F1 setting. Everything I've read about using hardware flow control on
a Mac says that DTR should be disabled or sporadic line drops can occur
(this is because the DIN 8 connector on the Mac/Modem cable ties together
the CTS and DTR signals, so that any time a CTS occurs the Mac will also
interpret this as a DTR and drop the connection - or something like that -
I might have my signal levels confused...). To summarize: my init string
is AT&F1&D0 and I've always had solid connections.

(snip) > &D0 which overrides the normal DTR operation...... (snip) Hi, I wonder if you will answer a couple questions from a newbie :-) I have a 14,4 USR and recently found that if I try to switch between applications during a download the connection is dropped. I then discovered that setting dip switch 1 to ON (Modem ignores DTR (override)) solves the problem. My questions are:- 1. What is the difference between using the dip switch to override DTR and using the &D0 command in the string? 2. Should they be used in conjunction with each other? Thanks, Mark Walker porker@dircon.co.uk -------------------

This is when set up for hardware handshaking, wit the proper cable. This will allow RTS to function normally. Chuck -- Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, How did you like the play?

USR modems are great when it is set up correctly. Did you read in the US
edition of Macuser the article about USR Mac&Fax Sportster V34?
Acording to Adam Engst in his Web pages the correct modem string is:
USRobotics ---> AT&M4&K1B0&A3&B1&D0&H1&I0&N0&R2
USRobotics Courier HST Dual ---> AT&F&C1&D0
USRobotics Courier V.32 bis/as ---> AT&F&D0&H1&K2
USRobotics Mac & Fax ---> AT&F&D0&H1
USRobotics Sportster 14.4 ---> AT&F&H1&C1&D0X4
USRobotics Sportster 28.8 ---> AT&F1
USRobotics Sportster 9600 ---> AT&F&H1
USRobotics Sportster V.34 ---> AT&F&A3&B1&H1&R2&D0&C1X4S=0S7=90
I personally set up mine to the one below, as a result of a trial and
error effort. The starting point was the init string of USR 14.4. It now
works well and I am too lazy to experiment further. It is working 100%.
The string is
USR Mac&Fax Sportster V.34 : AT&F&B1&H1&R2&D0
If someone can comment on my init string, it is very much appreciated.
Fax software: FAXstf 2.2.5 USR
Init string is : AT&FEQV&D2&R1&H2&I2S13=1
The above init string works with both 14.4 and V.34
Good Luck

My US Robotics modem works fine with the init "AT&F" on speed 19.2k but when I move it up to 57.6k it doesn't work. It connects but then just sits at the login stage. -- Life sucks, go home and die E-mail me at: malkire@hevanet.com

I'm using AT&F1&D0 and connecting fine at 57.6K.

If you enable hardware handshaking, but your modem ca= ble does not support that, you will just encounter those problems. If you don't have another cabel, try to switch off hardware hands= haking aka switch on Xon/Xoff. If that solves your problem, go get the right cable for maximum speed. Joerg
