Hi everyone! It's me, the original poster! Wow! I can't believe that this
thread kept going for so long, and that it would completely change topics like it
has! Well, as if anyone cares (grin...), I will give you an update on my
"Windows 95 saga". Hopefully, I can help some people out there who have had the
problems I did. So...here goes!
1)The non-existent files: Norton Utilites for 95 is a lifesaver. I know
that some people will say that it is just a way for Symantec to make more money
because they know that Win 95 will screw up everyone's machine, but it really is
a good program. Even when in DOS version, I had it, and it saved me a couple
times then, too! The problem I had was a damaged FAT, to be specific, and Norton
took care of all that for me. What it couldn't fix, it turned into a file, which
was easily deleted.
2)The joystick: Windows 95 detected the wrong gamecard. I have a CH
Gamecard III automatic, and the closest thing on the list was a Thrustmaster ACM
GameCard (which is very close, indeed). Switching to that card solved all my
problems.
3)The scanner: Not fixed yet, but Hewlett-Packard promises new drivers VERY
soon (as in tomorrow, theoretically!) which should allow the Deskscan program to
work. They should be available through their webpage.
4)The DS64 Video Card: Not fixed yet, either. This one is a real poser.
There is simply NO 24-bit color mode! I don't know if Diamond is coming out with
drivers, but a memory upgrade (or an entirely new card) is in the forseeable
future as a solid fix.
Well, that's about it. I would like to again thank ALL of you for your
helpfulness in my problems with Windows 95. Despite it's (slowly
disappearing) oddities, the interface is beginning to grow on me, and I
am slowly but surely getting my DOS programs (okay, games!) up and
running, one by one. While some people will, I'm sure, still insist
that 95 is a "piece of junk" (and the person who said that shall remain
nameless), and berate it to no end (you should read some of the letters
I've gotten!), I am beginning to change my opinion of Windows 95.
Whereas I said that I was "negatively impressed" with the program in my
first posting, I am starting to feel more and more positively towards
it, and while not suitable for everyone, it is certainly a leap ahead
of Windows 3.1! When it starts to come pre-installed on computers
where there are known to be no conflicts, I think it will prove a great
improvement over DOS for the casual and first-time computer users.
Thanks again, all of you!

P.S. - Could someone please send me a copy of my original post? I have
almost completely forgotten what I said!
P.P.S. - Word has gotten back to me that someone might have published
my original posting (along with my e-mail address) in a
magazine/newsletter, possibly several of them. Please, if anyone wants
to do that again, ASK ME!!! I will almost definitely say yes; I just
want to know where this stuff is ending up. Thanks!
