FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday July 31, 1992 Contact: Sam Goldberger Spherical Solutions +1.415.383.7512 sphere@netcom.com (NeXTMail welcome) Spherical's "Enhanced Processing Board (EPB)" dramatically increases the power, speed, and functionality of the NeXT Cube. Consisting of a specially modified CPU board, cabling, and a suite of proprietary software with a NeXTStep interface, the EPB effectively doubles the Cube's computing power. Specifically, the EPB provides: 1) Distributed processing under such applications as Mathematica, Renderman, Zilla, etc. 2) Extra ports (SCSI, serial, DSP) for the connection of additional peripheral devices 3) Printer, fax, mail or network service for more efficient use of system resources 4) Continuing compatibility of the Optical Drive even with the Turbo upgrade, when released. Using Spherical's EPB software, a second Workspace may be mounted on the screen, together with a second application dock, suitably offset from the main dock. All workspace tools (copy, move, delete, symlink, etc) are enabled. Any application may be double-click launched, and runs remotely on the EPB while appearing on the local monitor as usual. Alternatively, a second monitor and keyboard may be connected to the EPB. Power-up and shutdown are accomplished gracefully, using the Power key. The EPB is connected to the main board over the Ethernet, and may be run as diskless client, or, upon purchase of a software license from NeXT Computers, Inc, may be run from a dedicated hard drive connected to the board's SCSI port for faster operation. In purchasing the EPB Package, the customer supplies a board for modification by Spherical (either an '030 or a 25 mhz '040). We modify it, and return it with software, cabling, documentation and 90 day warrantee within 48 hours of receipt. Spherical Solutions also has a limited number of '030 and '040 boards available for sale, pre-modified, and bundled with the EPB kit.
