DataPhile Now Shipping for NeXTstep 2.0 --------------------------------------- ALBUQUERQUE, NM.- April 6, 1992 - Stone Design today shipped DataPhile, the full featured flat-file database for NeXT computers. DataPhile's much anticipated release fills the giant void left by the absence of a flatfile database program for the NeXT market. "DataPhile is the best personal data manager there is. It fills a great hole and is the best of its breed on any platform, PC or workstation,: said Steven P. Jobs, CEO of NeXT Computer, Inc. DataPhile is designed for end-users who need a flexible way to manage information without the complexities of a relational database. Using an intuitive front end, anyone can build and manage a personal flat-file database, modifying it and generating reports quickly and without assistance from their MIS department. "DataPhile's v1.0 capabilities have far exceeded the expectations of our users due to the fact that we implemented so many of their suggestions," said Andrew Stone, CEO of Stone Design. "The result of their input is a database that anyone can immediately use to handle both simple and complex data management tasks." DataPhile makes it simple for NeXT users to gather, organize, retrieve and manage nearly any kind of information, from images to documents. To build a database, users create data fields using an interface that lets them specify field type, various data entry options and constraints. Field types include text, number, date, currency, boolean, picture, sound, file and a wide range of calculated field options that accept mathematical formulas. Any number of data fields can be added, modified or deleted, at any time, without losing data. DataPhile enables users to add a document created with any type of NeXT application merely by dragging and dropping the appropriate icon into a special file field type. Double-clicking on the file field launches the application and opens the document. Pictures and sounds can be stored in DataPhile, simply by dragging them as icons from the workspace or copied from the pasteboard. DataPhile is compatible with Create, Stone Design's powerful and easy-to-use drawing application. Images produced using Create can be pasted into a DataPhile picture field, stored and later retrieved and pasted back into a Create document for editing. To better understand their data, users can view information in unlimited ways, including a default view that appears whenever the database is opened and allows immediate data entry. They can also design custom views with the product's set of sophisticated layout tools that includes fields, labels and graphic elements. Views can contain one record or multiple records, and several views can be working simultaneously. DataPhile can automatically create a new database from any text file created from another source. DataPhile can also import data into an existing database and provides a simple interface for matching fields. Records can be pasted into other applications as tab-delimited text. DataPhile databases can be exported as text, as RTF-text and in Improv, Write Now or WordPerfect file formats.
