Hannover, Germany (March 11, 1992) -- In a joint announcement made today,
Informix Software, Inc., and NeXT Computer, Inc., introduced an implementation
of the relational database management system INFORMIX-SE Release 4.1 on NeXT.
The introduction was made at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany, the world's largest
computer and communications exhibition, where both Informix and NeXT are
demonstrating the port.
INFORMIX-SE (Standard Engine) is a powerful easy to use relational database
management system suited for small- to mid-range application environments.
The SQL-based system is mainly used in front-end applications within both
single-vendor and multi-vendor client/server environments .
INFORMIX-SE provides high performance and sophisticated features which assure
data consistency in multiuser configurations. Only a minimum of database
administrator expertise is required making this product an ideal solution for
small corporations and self-contained departments.
In addition to the database management system port, which also includes
INFORMIX-NET and C-ISAM, Informix's front-end tools, such as INFORMIX-4GL,
INFORMIX-4GL/RDS, INFORMIX-4GL/ID and INFORMIX-SQL as well as ESQL/C, are also
now available for NeXT systems. These Tools provide an efficient environment
for software development with Informix's databases.
"Being sophisticated multimedia workstations NeXT computers are an ideal
front-end for all kinds of database access applications," said Tim Shetler,
Vice President of database engines and connectivity products at Informix.
"This new port is part of our strategy to support all major hardware platforms
based on industry standards."
"As NeXT makes greater inroads in corporate computing, the availability of high
performance database management systems becomes essential," said Steven P.
Jobs,
founder and CEO of NeXT Computer. "With INFORMIX-SE we can now supply our
customers with one of the world's leading and most powerful systems for small
and medium sized organisations."
INFORMIX-SE is the second Informix product to be available on NeXT. It follows
Informix Wingz, a front-end tool used for accessing data stored in corporate
databases within client/server environments.
INFORMIX-SE Release 4.1 for NeXT is available immediately on a worldwide basis
through both Informix and NeXT, distributors, VARs and OEM's.
