My model of that (don't know if it's right) is that you can
write 0% of any color you like (white and black being the
easiest ones to get from the monochrome picker).  Since the
on-screen appearance is the same in either case (within
Icon, I mean), you don't know what you're doing unless you
make a careful, conscious choice.  Then, presumably, if the
alpha information is ignored, the underlying color
information (setgray in PostScript, for example) remains.
