I finally got my NeXT CD Rom. But for some reason no sounds come out of the speaker, seems to work with headphones. Is this the only way to play CD's or can I listen to them through the computer speaker? -- Manuel Alberto Ricart alberto@parsec.mixcom.com <NeXTMail Welcome>

Is this the only way to play CD's or > can I listen to them through the computer speaker? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Due to the audio CD industry's copy restrictions, moving audio data across the SCSI bus where it could be played through the speakers or copied to disk is not implemented. So I'm afraid you're stuck with headphones or stereo output jacks on the back of the CD-ROM drive. -- Art Isbell Cubic Solutions NeXT Registered Developer #745 NeXT software development and consulting NeXTmail: isbell@cats.UCSC.EDU Voice: (408)335-1154 USmail: 95018-9442 Fax: (408)335-2515 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SHOULD THIS BE A FAQ? -- Manuel Alberto Ricart alberto@parsec.mixcom.com <NeXTMail Welcome>

Then, use some sort of sound app to play the current input. (I'm not sure what's the best to do this without recording the sound too) Of course, you can buy amplified speakers, too. They're very available, now that sound cards are commonplace for PC's and everyone needs magnetic shielded speakers for the sides of their monitors. The sound data can't travel over the SCSI interface to your computer. Very few CD-ROM drives have this capability (the SGI unit is the only one I know of). (Well, actually, it's in the drive BIOS, but Dave Olsen (sp?) will come in and correct me if I'm wrong :-) -- David Lemson (217) 244-1205 University of Illinois NeXT Campus Consultant / CCSO NeXT Lab System Admin Internet : lemson@uiuc.edu UUCP :...!uiucuxc!uiucux1!lemson NeXTMail accepted BITNET : LEMSON@UIUCVMD

You have to get a cable to connect the output of CD-ROM drive to NeXT microphone input at the back of the monitor. Then run CDPlayer (or CDAudio) and play the CD. Immediately after that type in the Terminal: record|play You can get the record and play commands from Gopher source on nova.cc.purdue.edu Dmitri Linde dmitri@physics.stanford.edu P.S. You lose some quality of the sound though... Therefore I prefer headphones.
