I've uploaded this PostScript font collection to sonata.cc.purdue.edu, directory /pub/next/submissions/Font There are a large number of fonts available at ftp sites, but they rarely have been set up properly for NeXT machines nor are they often fully PostScript type 1 compatible. The usual situation is a bunch of randomly named files with incorrect font names in the afm file and only partially or erroneously encoded character sets. I don't like this. So I downloaded a huge pile of fonts and sifted thru them searching for correct fonts. Unfortunately, not many freely available fonts are "perfect", but here is a reasonably large collection of them (about 1M compressed, 1.8M opened). To use one font under NeXTstep 2.2, chdir to ~/Library/Fonts (make it if you don't yet have it) and do the command: zcat Font-whatever.tar.Z | tar xf - for each font you wish to install, then execute the commands: buildafmdir cacheAFMData . If you have root access on your machine, you can install these fonts to the /LocalLibrary/Fonts in a similar way to give access to all your users. The fonts included in these packages are: ArnoldBoecklin-ExtraBold Baskerville-Normal Baskerville-Bold Baskerville-Italic Blippo-Heavy Bodoni-Normal Bodoni-Bold Bodoni-Italic Brush-Script-Italic Cooper-Heavy Garamond-Normal Garamond-Medium-Italic Goudy-Old-Style-Normal Goudy-Old-Style-Bold Goudy-Old-Style-Italic ParkAvenue-Normal Slogan-Normal Happy Hacking, -- /* * * Otto J. Are these fonts public domain or shareware? From the names, it seems these are commercial fonts sold by Adobe or ITC or whoever for $150+? -- E r n e s t o F. B. P e n a | "Volite Magis, ................................ | Facite Magis, erno@uiuc.edu NeXTmail accepted | Estote Magis."

I believe Garamond is a very specific font by Adobe, and all of them seem to be of REALLY high (read Commercial) quality. I downloaded the earlier known PD/Shareware fonts, and none of them look as good as these. Also, most PD/Shareware fonts aren't designed as something you would write a book in, while these things are (for the most part), text you would use for good looking titles or printing. Furthermore, they are whole font families, in many cases including bold and italic. Most PD/Shareware fonts seem to be just one typeface. I'm quite suspicios. Glen, are you out there? Could someone please definatly tell us the status of these fonts? On a related topic, can you buy individual font families, and if so, how much are they? (If Brush Script is Adobe issue, I'd like a ligit copy of it, and I am also intersted in getting the Sonata font. The rest of the fonts I could cair less about. I'm a Times/Courier kinda guy.) -- Nicholas C. Weaver nweaver@soda.berkeley.edu It is a tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, .signifying nothing.

The AFM (Adobe Font Metric) files may be Adobe issue, but the fonts themselves don't seem to be. I used the FontLister utility to print samples of the Garamond font and compared to Adobe's own Garamond. They're similar, certainly, but definitely not the same. Compare, for example, the glyph 'a'. It's quite different; the top edge of the top "loop" of the a on the Adobe font is rounded, while on the PD font, it's more of a straight line. Also compare the 'b'; the bottom of the glyph is much straighter on the PD font; the Adobe font has a more visible serif. Still, the quality of these fonts *is* commercial grade. Maybe someone could compare the PD garamond to other commercial Garamonds such as ITC Garamond?

Two of the best mail-readers (mh and elm) are free. The two best newsreaders (nn and trn) are free. Top-notch versions of most Unix-originated utilities (GNU) are free. Much powerful image-conversion and compression software is free. Some of the best communications software is free. Some of the best interpreted languages (perl) are free. I'll refrain from overgeneralizing from this or getting preachy, but certainly higher-than-normal quality would seem to suggest that the software is free, rather than the reverse. -- Irving_Wolfe@Happy-Man.com Happy Man Corp. 206/463-9399 x101 4410 SW Pt. I must admit to being a bit suspicious myself about some of them, but I believe there is some kind of a Adobe Garamond demo floating around. However, since these fonts are already at several ftp sites, I see no reason to keep my work to install them from the net.public -- if it turns out they were pirated (and I really doubt it in the case of a font called "ArnoldBoecklin" -- does anyone know who he is?) they can always be deleted. -- /* * * Otto J. There is a font called Arnold B\o"cklin (\o" = odieresis) in the Adobe font catalog. I don't remember what company it is from though (not Adobe, maybe ITC?). An educated guess is that Arnold is the font's designer.
