Can someone help me with this bootup problem?

I just received my 3.0 upgrade. It was booting fine off the external hard drive, but I took it back in because the place that did it for me didn't include NeXTCD and everything in it. After he put that on, I took it home and tried to boot up and now it seems to hang at the point "Checking System Files". It just sits there and I can't see any exchange (flashing light) with the external drive. I thought maybe it was just going to take a while but it stayed that way for over 10 minutes. Does anyone know what happened? Did something get overwritten on the hard drive? It still has 35MB left free, so I sort of doubt it. Did the guy at the store have to do something bizzare to get access to my drive? The SCSI address is set to 0 now so that's not the problem ....... I would go talk to the store about it, but this is the 5th time I've been back there this week to try to get this miserable computer working. BTW, I have had the worst service imaginable in my purchase of a NeXT Turbo Station. It's almost to the point now that I wish I had gone with a less powerful Mac or PC because all of the hassle I've had to go through to get the most basic things set up ..... has anyone else out there experienced this sort of thing? Thank you for any help/comments. K. Tamura

In the recent issue of NeXTwatch (nextwatch@skylee.com), p. 3, they say that you should NOT, EVER EVER EVER EVER create a directory on your hard disk called /NextCD because the /etc/rc.boot file will think the hard disk is a CD-ROM and mount it read-only. As of late, there is no easy way to fix this problem. (I didn't quote the article exactly because I'm paranoid of copyright laws :-)) Sorry you've had so much troubles. -- Adam Fedor, CU boulder | adam@bastille.rmnug.org (Home, NextMail) | quick .sig hack... fedor@boulder.colorado.edu (Work) |

If so, 10 minutes might well not be long enough. Well, you *can* put a /NextCD directory on your disk, *provided you change /etc/rc.boot as well*. This obviously won't work if you boot off the CD, but if you boot off the CD this doesn't apply anyway. It's only a bad idea to change the /etc/rc* files other than rc.local if you don't know what it is you're doing and the full ramifications thereof. Since the existance of /NextCD is checked only once near the beginning of /etc/rc.boot, changing that directory on your hard drive won't hurt (heck, even taking out the check on your hard drive won't hurt as it's definitely not going to be booting from CD ROM). Of course, one should realize they're fiddling with a standard. There should be a better way to determine if you're booting from a CD ROM or not than looking for a directory; something like a disk -s /dev/rsd0a | grep removable check or something. >Adam Fedor, CU boulder | >adam@bastille.rmnug.org (Home, NextMail) | quick .sig hack... >fedor@boulder.colorado.edu (Work) | ------ Mike Matthews, matthews@oberon.umd.edu (NeXTmail accepted) ------ The past always looks better than it was.
