I've read only one review of G&M's recently-released book, of those

that have read it, would you post your opinion of the quality of the book and why you feel the way you do about it?

I would be more interested in reviews of the book now that it has gone to press because this is the copy I would be buying were I to purchase this book. I also would be more interested in reviews of the book from more than just one person.

Thanks,

G&M's book, combined with a 3.0 system and NeXT's printed versions of
"NeXTSTEP Development Tools and Techniques: Release 3" and "NeXTSTEP
General Reference: Release 3, Volume 1 & 2" is everything you need
to leap feet first into real world, serious NeXT hacking. I wish I'd
had this book two years ago when I started. The single nicest thing
about the book is its emphasis on building a fulll blown application-it's not a
series of demo programs strung together, but a clear, well thought
(set of) application(s) that they're talking about building (and build).

The only depressing thing about this book is the fact that it points out
all the great books that should/could be written for the NeXT market.
Let's hope the market continues to expand so books of equivalent caliber
on other areas (like the two they talk about in the intro) will be
written.

Congrats to Simson and Michael for a job well done. It's been long in
coming; I'm just happy it's here so I can recommend it.

This is a great book! (I hit chapter 6 this weekend, and I just received the
book last week!). I like it because it's organization is well thought out and
it strikes (at least for me) a good balance between detail and breadth.

Easily the best NeXTSTEP programming book out today.

Here a listing of the chapters to give you an idea of its contents:

	Chapter 1
	Introduction to the NeXTSTEP
	Graphical User Interface

	Chapter 2
	NeXTSTEP Development Tools

	Chapter 3
	Creating a Simple Application
	With Interface Builder

	Chapter 4
	Creating an Application
	Without Interface Builder

	Chapter 5
	Building a Project:
	A Four Function Calculator

	Chapter 6
	Nibs and Icons

	Chapter 7
	Delegation and Resizing

	Chapter 8
	Events and Responders

	Chapter 9
	Mach and the Window Server

	Chapter 10
MathPaper and Multiple Windows (MathPaper is an app you build)

	Chapter 11
	Spawning Muitiple Processes
	and the Text Object

	Chapter 12
	Text and Rich Text

	Chapter 13
	Saving, Loading, and Printing

	Chapter 14
	Drawing with Display PostScript

	Chapter 15
	Draw yourself:
	All About NeXTSTEP Views

	Chapter 16
	GraphPaper: A Muiti-Threaded
	Application with a Display List

	Chapter 17
	Color

	Chapter 18
	View Resizing and Mouse Tracking

	Chapter 19
	Zooming and Saving Graphics Files

	Chapter 20
	The Pasteboard and Services

	Chapter 21
	Preferences and Defaults

**note that every chapter has a number of subparts

The infomation contained in this book is easily worth the $40
I paid.

Happy happy happy

I've had the book for two or three weeks now, and I'm about half way
through it. So far it's very well written and helpful. The example
applications are used to explain and demonstrate general concepts that
would've been much harder to gleen from the online reference material.
There are typos here and there but I haven't encountered any that were
hard to recognize and correct.

Summary: So far, so good! I'll post again when I've finished it.

Does this mean that I must have 3.0 to use the book????

No. Simson & Michael did a nice job of simultaneously discussing a 2.x
and a 3.0 environment, and I believe their supplied code works just fine
under 2.x. I was expressing my personal opinion that, from a programmer's
perspective, 3.0 offers so much more in terms of functionality than 2.x
that if you want to do serious hacking, you need 3.0. I seem to be one
of the few people that hasn't been bitten badly by bugs in the current
release of 3.0 - it's been quite stable for the sorts of things I want
to do. I'm also doing things that just weren't possible under 2.x (writing
a lot of IB palettes which take advantage of all the public IB protocols,
3D Kit stuff, etc.).

Hope that clears up any confusion I might have generated.

If you order it from me, you can save a few bucks and get
better-than-average service.

I'm charging $39 _including_ U.S. shipping, vs. $42.45 from the
publisher, allow you to order conveniently by e-mail, and save you
from having to deal directly with the publisher (which can be a big
or small advantage, depending on the particular publisher -- no
comment on which it is in this case; try it with a bunch of them
and see for yourself).

(Yes, you $40 people who already ordered are being re-priced at $39
when your books ship and you are finally billed. We're decent
folks here! And your books should arrive any day now!)

We'll need your Visa or Mastercard (only) number and expiration
date, mailable delivery address, and, to the extent they exist,
e-mail, fax, and day and evening phone numbers. THIS IS IMPORTANT!
People almost as smart as you have accidentally given us impossible
(there's a check digit) credit card numbers, phone numbers with
exchanges that don't exist, and street addresses but no city.
Protect yourself by giving us as many ways of reaching you as
possible! My re-selling your home phone number is about as likely
as your re-selling mine (which you have, by the way, so please be
courteous about when to call; I'm on the West Coast).

We're happy to take overseas orders if you're happy to pay the
shipping. We charge an averaged rate of $9 by sea (but expect
arbitrary delays beyond actual shipping time of up to 4 additional
weeks, by both countries' postal authorities, to encourage the use
of airmail) or $17 by airmail.

We also sell the official (by NeXT) NeXTSTEP Developer's Library at
an even more attractive price (thanks to a bigger discount from the
publisher); please inquire if interested.

Regards and happy programming,
 - Irving
