3.x is supposed to be _binary_ compatible with 2.x programs, but as with
1.x->2.x won't be source code compatible.  This means that apps which you
don't have the source too are OK, but anything that you're gonna be
recompiling might end up needing to be changed.

This sorta forces developers to keep up to date, but allows users to run their
same old proggies...
