As Hoare once said: The pointer represents the greatest backwards step taken in computer science. There is something very badly wrong with the C language in that even people who've used it over a matter of years do not understand its semantics. Of course, when they up and admit it (and their pprograms bomb, or they cannot read other people's nice complex code), we tell them that they're dumb. Folks, I've been programming for almost 20 years, and I don't mind admitting that often I cannot understand some ugly pointer construction. And I'll gladly welcome any language feature that will deal with them automatically. Indeed, I think that one of the big "wins" of procedural OOP is that most of the usual pointer uses (passing record adresses and accessing members) are hidden behind the syntactic sugar of instance variables, while methods (ie. member functions) are used in lieu of pointers to functions. That was my rambling posting of the month-freedom of speech is not much use unless you occasionnally speak. Edmund.
