3.0 and 2.x default questions

I am on a network of NeXTs and I use both 3.0 machines and 2.x machines.  Several of  
us use (enable) the Menu Button option under preferences so we can get App menus out  
of our way.  I am usually working on a 3.0 machine and the mouse menu button works  
fine, but if I ever go to a 2.x machine, I (and others) can't get the mouse menu button to  
stay in my defaults.  

How can I get 2.x to save my mouse menu button as enabled?  Does having both 3.0 and  
2.x defaults cause a conflict (I know they are different files.)
