Incidentally, all of this is very clearly described in the "NeXT specific"
documentation for Mathematica which you can get from WRI for $25. You
get a guide to the kernel, a guide to the front end, a list of the 
packages, and a list of what all the error messages mean, plus a 
few other tidbits.  It's well worth the price if you're planning to
use Mma much, and REALLY worth it if you want to do anything fancy in
the notebooks, which, now that there are TeXview services and I have
some PS math fonts, I really want to do.  I would not suggest buying
Wolfram's book directly from WRI as you can usually get it a little 
cheaper from a bookstore, but the NeXT documentation package is a must.
