Well, I don't know why it wouldn't work with Mathematica.app in
NextApps, so I re-installed Mathematica from scratch where I wanted it.
Then I set up the link from math to /NextApps/Mathematica.app/Kernel/
NeXT/mathexe, same as before, and the bloody thing worked.  I think I
must have moved Mathematica instead of reinstalling it and mixed up the
math script.  Re-installing it fixed the problem.

Why Gourmet will run when mathexe is linked to math but
not when mathexe exists in its own right is beyond me.
