getting started with TeX

Hi,

I wonder if someone might tell me how to get started using LaTeX.  I don't
want to know how to write a document but, rather, what software do I need?
I don't have the extended release so I don't have TeX on my system.  In the
recent thread about word processors (or lack thereof) it was mentioned that
there are some nice "viewers."  Anyway, what apps do I need to get hold of?
