emacs-18.59 pkg for NeXT posted

In response to some requests, I've built an installer package
containing the executables, etc directory, and elisp library for
emacs-18.59. Note that this is ONLY good for 3.0. I've posted it to
cs.orst.edu in pub/next/submissions; I tried to put it on sonata, but
couldn't get the upload to go through. I'll try again later. The
contents of an associated README file are included below.

Emacs-18.59.tar is a tarfile containing a version of this README and
the file emacs-18.59.pkg, an installer package for NS3.0.

This package contains a complete, compiled version of the FSF's latest
version of GNU-emacs, 18.59. It was compiled under NeXTSTEP version 3.0,
and will only run under that version of the operating system. The total
size of the installed files should be ca. 7216K.

It should be installed in /usr/local, since the built-in load-path (for
finding elisp files) and exec-path (for finding the executable and other
files in the etc directory) are set to /usr/local/lib/emacs/{lisp,etc}.
The executables emacs, etags, ctags and emacsclient will be installed in
/usr/local/bin.

You should probably keep the original version of emacs (and its supporting
files in /usr/lib/emacs) at least until you are sure this version works on
your system. To use emacs-18.59 (instead of the emacs-18.55 supplied by
NeXT), make sure that the directory /usr/local/bin appears in your
executables path (determined by the PATH shell variable), and that it is
ahead of /usr/bin.

I have also included the elisp files eterm-{fns,mouse,low}.el{,c} and
term/eterm.el in the /usr/local/emacs/lisp directory. These files were
taken from the Emacs distribution, which provides a NS front end for
emacs. If you don't currently have this package, get it from one of the
ftp sites: the elisp files included here are only a part of it, and are
included just to save you the effort of copying them from elsewhere if
you already use it.

Problems with this package can be reported to me; problems with emacs
itself, of course, can be addressed in various newsgroups or reported
to the FSF.

It's been pointed out to me that the Emacs front end to emacs has the
path /usr/bin/emacs built in as the place to find an emacs executable.
This gives you (at least) three choices if you want to use it as a
front end to the emacs-18.59 executable I posted today: (a) save
/usr/bin/emacs as /usr/bin/emacs.dist and move /usr/local/bin/emacs
into /usr/bin; (b) save /usr/bin/emacs as in a, and make a link from
/usr/local/bin/emacs to /usr/bin/emacs; or (c) Get the Emacs sources,
and edit the line in EtermView.m that forks the emacs shell to start
up /usr/local/bin/emacs instead of /usr/bin/emacs. Of these, (a) is in
some sense the most conservative, since you don't even have to put
/usr/local/bin on your PATH if you don't have to have anything else
there (move etags, ctags, and emacsclient in the same way). (b) is
what I did - so long ago I'd forgotten about it.

I've just replaced the emacs-18.59 package on cs.orst.edu with a new
version. I guess I'll get it right eventually: I had omitted to
include the info directory, which is now part of the package. This is
the first time I've built an installer package, so I hope it works. By
the way, I used the Packager App by Toby Paterson which I found on the
NeXT educational CD-ROM - it certainly makes it straightforward to
build a package.

I've been trying since yesterday morning to post this to
sonata.cc.purdue.edu, but the machine won't accept more than about 66K
of the file. Looks like other people are having the same problem
(there were several files of exactly that same size in the submissions
directory yesterday): perhaps the disk is full.

After installing, you should check that the directory
/usr/local/lib/emacs/lock is writable by everyone, and perhaps remove
the lockfile for my .newsrc which got into the pcakage by mistake.....

This is getting ridiculous. It turns out that the package I made and
uploaded to cs.orst.edu earlier today is corrupt.

So I've made a new file, using gnutar. This compressed tarfile is
itself wrapped in another tarfile, just so you'll be sure to see the
README, which tells you to unpack the (real) tarfile under /usr/local
so stuff will get put in the right places.

The new version has replaced the corrupt one on cs.orst.edu as of 3:00
PM EST today (3 Nov). I'm still trying to get it uploaded to sonata as
well.
