Hi!

My own next is not connected to internet but I would like to read mail with it.
I have transferred mails from my schools computer by modem. (simply copying
/usr/spool/mail/username to my nexts /usr/spool/mail/username)
Now I am wondering if there is any apps that could make the same automatically
Or even better if it could send mails from my own next (using the address of
schools machine).
If you know anything about apps that could help me please answer!

By the way.. is there any apps that transfer news from news-server to hard disk by modem?

I use the public domain MailService which should be available at
sonata.cc.purdue.edu:pub/next/2.0-release/{bin,source}. MailService sends
selected text as a mail message on your local machine (appends the text to
/usr/spool/mail/your_account). So all you need to do is read mail in Terminal
on a remote mail host, select a message of interest (including the header),
select "Mail>Send As A Message" from the Services menu, and then get you new
message in Mail on your NeXT. This works fine for both NeXT and non-NeXT mail,
but not so good for really long messages.

Outbound mail is not so convenient. I mail them to myself from Mail, and if
they're not too long, just open /usr/spool/mail/art in Edit, and copy and
paste the body of the message (including the NeXT-Attachment: line) into
Terminal after initiating the sending of mail in Unix mail on my remote host.
This works best using modems with flow control and error correction, and seems
to work best if the remote host is in emacs or vi rather than mail itself. For
long messages, kermit or zmodem seem to be the best approach.

There were several suggestions to this post. But the most obvoius (maybe not
practicable, I don't know what finish universities policies are), namely using
uucp for BOTH mail AND news wasn't mentioned. All you need is a uucp 'account'
on the universities side, a uucp password, a good uucp software (try taylor
from the archives) and a propper sendmail.cf and off you go! Mail and news will
work as if you were on the net, just that the responses will be delayed.
