Those of you (/us) who have complained about the ancient version of emacs that ships with NeXTs (even 3.0) will be pleased to know that the latest version, 18.59, compiles and runs absolutely without change out of the box for NeXT. See gnu.emacs.announce (or comp.archives) for further information on how and where to get it. All you have to do is edit src/config.h to use m-next.h and s-mach2.h, and set up the places where you want the lisp, etc and lock directories to reside in src/paths.h. Do a make in the etc directory, then in src, and then install things where you want them. This is, I think, the first version of emacs with NeXT support fully folded in. It also supports the Franz lisp<-->emacs interface without any additional patching. Assuming you use ACL, just put the fi/* files in a directory on your load-path and load fi/site-init. If there is demand, I could put a compiled version (with lisp libraries) on sonata. But if you have the development tools and enough disk space for the sources (at least long enough to build it), it's so straightforward that I'm not sure that's worthwhile. --Steve Anderson

I forgot to mention that I built emacs-18.59 under NS3.0 - If you're still using 2.x, your mileage may vary. --Steve Anderson

Following Steve's example I built emacs-18.59 (using remotely mounted sources to save disk space) including X-window support and am happy to report that xemacs works fine both under co-Xist (3.0 beta) and remotely via SLIP. Only lacking feature is highlighted copy-paste, like the Huge HP-gnu-emacs (so far -- hope to get it to work some time). It works fine with many of the emacs-19 features dumped in, such as ange-ftp, tree-dired, and allows you to run scheme/lisp subprocesses. Suggestion to NeXT: compile it and put it on the archives as a substitute for 18.55.121. -- Hardy ----- Meinhard E.
