Advice needed on new Hard Disk

Hi.
It seems my posting didn't make it out to comp.sys.next.sysadmin,
so here's a quick repost:

I have just bought a HP Gigabyte drive (HP 97549TF S2)
for my cube. It's SCSI 2, slow (17ms) and big (full height).

I need to know if it has a cache and how to enable it, which
formatting program is reccommended (I have used TheFormatter with
good results on a Wren), and what configuration you more experienced
sysadmins ;-) reccommend (I'm thinking of partitioning, builddisk
scripts, etc).

It will be sitting in my home machine, and may one day soon
function as a local archive server for our user group/area,
either over the Net or SLIP. So I'd like the disk to be set
up for maximum speed.
