In article <1992Oct6.020338.14827@cube.handheld.com>, jmd@cube.handheld.com (Jim De Arras) writes... >How can I convince BuildDisk to use different parameters? I can >change newfs parameters to change the defaults, but BuildDisk wants to do it >all over. Well, I've held off for several days hoping that someone more qualified would answer, but... [Portions of this information may be wrong. Instead of flaming me, just post the corrections....] Here's how you can do it with "standard" disks: BuildDisk normally (in 2.1 or higher) dynamically figures out a disktab entry for your disk and offers you the two standard configurations you see. However, if you create the proper entry in /etc/disktab, BuildDisk will use this entry instead of the default entry for a single partion. The best way for you to create the entry is to pay $15 to Rory Bolt, and use his excellent "SCSI Formatter" (formatter_1.2.tar.Z on the archives) to generate a disktab entry for you. After you've copied this entry into /etc/disktab, you can then modify it and builddisk will use this entry when you choose "single partition" (even if you've set up three partitions in the disktab entry.) Alternately, if you don't want to use the formatter (foolish!), you can find out the disk name with the following: paranoia# /usr/etc/disk /dev/rsd0a disk name: MAXTOR XT-8760S disk type: fixed_rw_scsi Disk utility disk> quit The name is "MAXTOR XT-8760S," so for your disktab, put that name as the first parameter: # MAXTOR XT-8760S default partion for Builddisk's "single partition" choice MAXTOR XT-8760S|MAXTOR XT-8760S w/1024 byte sectors as 1 partition or whatever:\ :ty=fixed_rw_scsi:nc#1632:nt#15:ns#28:ss#1024:rm#3600:\ :fp#160:bp#0:ng#0:gs#0:ga#0:ao#0:\ :os=sdmach:z0#32:z1#96:r0=a:\ :pa#0:sa#676256:ba#8192:fa#1024:ca#32:da#4096:ra#10:oa=time:\ :ia:ta=4.3BSD: Now I have to admit that I just used the formatter program to generate the rest of the entry, but you'll be forced to try to do it by hand. Best of luck. In either case, you should now be able to run BuildDisk, choose "single partition" (even if your configuration is NOT a single partition) and it will work! Valid for 2.1, 2.2. ============================================================================= -Mike Kienenberger FXMLK@ALASKA (BITNet) Academic Computing FXMLK@acad3.alaska.edu (Internet) University of Alaska-Fairbanks "I'm a computer programmer....<link><link><kludge><kludge> say-no-more!"
