Results of trial and error, after hearing/reading about the
"swaptimizer:"
If your /etc/swaptab has the ,compressed entry (after lowat and
hiwat), after rebooting you will have compressed or "swaptimized"
swapping and df will show wo swapfiles: /private/vm/swapfile and
swapfile.front (the latter being "mounted"). This seems to be the
default for NeXTStations with less than 12 MB RAM and Color Stations
with less than 16 (I have 20, therefore trial and error was required).
df does some "creative accounting," since if you add up the occupied
space, minfree (10%) and the two swapfiles you end up with more than
your disk can hold. Obviously the two swapfiles are not independent
and their inflation is correlated.

However if you have the entry ,uncompressed (or nothing, but > 12/16
MB) in your /etc/swaptab, swapping is as in 2.1.

I was unable to determine which of the two is better -- only that
subjectively it seems that with swaptimizer the originally smaller
files will swell up faster (e.g., if one starts up mathematica or runs
a compilation).

If anyone has run any comparative timings, or can shed more light on
the subject (the man-page and release note does not even
mention the second swapfile, and the index of DL does not find
anything appropriate).
