popd mail works? available?

Does anybody know if the NeXT supports the pop mail daemon? Is it
standard with the NeXT or can I ftp it from somewhere?

Thanks in advance,
Eric.

Look at
ftp.cc.berkeley.edu:pub/popper/popper-1.831beta.tar.Z

Despite the name, this is no longer "beta" software--it's the
final release, as explained in the companion README.release file.

It works fine under 2.x (remember to add -bsd to CFLAGS in the
Makefile)--I haven't tried compiling under the heinous/vile 3.0.
We made some minor changes locally (e.g. bailing out if
/etc/nologin exists), but it's certainly usable out-of-the-box.

+ niload into services:
pop-3	110/tcp	pop3

+ add to /etc/inetd.conf:
pop3	stream	tcp	nowait	root	/your/path/to/popper	popper

+ add to /etc/syslog.conf:
local0.notice;local0.debug /your/path/to/logfile

+ touch that file

+ send SIGHUPs to both syslogd and inetd (or reboot)

Still eagerly awaiting 3.1. :-)

Eric, what client programs are you using? York is using
bot pop and imap from its main servers, but I've only seen
NeXT imap clients.

None--we run POP servers for the benefit of Macintoys and other
"inadequate" machines.  POP clients offer no advantage to us;
NeXTs are perfectly happy NFS-mounting a mail spool, and a
suitably hacked sendmail.cf takes care of things in the other
direction.

This probably should be crossposted to comp.mail.sendmail.flame (:-)), but
York is trying very hard to provide e-mail to a large community which is
**not** early-adopters, and so tend to regard sendmail's vagarities as the
actions of a **formally erronious** mail program. That we have to use nfs
mounts and hacked sendmails is a positive disadvantage to us.
We're a zmailer-and-pop site, and would prefer never to see another
copy of sendmail again. Thus the question about proper NeXT pop clients.
