Help: cannot boot NeXT
#1472

I have this major problem with the NeXTstation in our
lab. I really messed up the files needed for booting, such as
/sdmach and /usr/etc/mach_init ... now the machine won't even boot
to single-user mode. I could fix the boot files if I can become root
somehow ( I have copies of the correct files in / ).
so what to do now? can I boot from a floppy, and how do I create a
boot floppy? I tried booting from our server on the net,
but all I get is lots of error ; I don't know what I have to do
to boot off our server somehow. We dont have optical disk drive.
I don't mind even if I have to rebuild the
hard disk, nothing crucial will be lost; but how do I do that if
I can't boot?
We are running NeXTStep 2.0 at the moment.
many thanks for any suggestions,
Istvan

Stephen,

My recommendation would be to pull a hard drive (temporarily) out of one
of the other NeXT stations, put it in an external box, and boot from that,
then mount the other drive and fix the problem, or rebuild the disk.
