Hi gang.

Well, I upgraded to 3.0 last night - I didn't really get to
play with it too much (after midnight before I was finished)
but I don't feel overly impressed. :-(

It's slow.  (b sd() sdmach nbuf=64) on a 040 cube 16MB ram.
Maybe 'bloated' is more appropriate. Exactly what I thought
NeXT (especially with Mach) was trying to get away from...

It's ugly (who's idea was the 'American-TV-perfect-family-house',
anyway? And he left out the Mexican/Japanese gardener ;-)
Very 'Coca-Colonial.' Even remembered to get a Simpsons (tm)
sound among the system sounds. O.K., enough cultural criticism.
Whoever is responsible for the graphics has gone _way_ too far IMHO.
I'd rather it was peppier and cleaner in look and feel.

Many of the good/interesting demo's are gone (where are Fractal Trees -
or am I the only one who liked it ;-) What happened to Icon?
I guess I'm lucky to have an OD system with a clean 2.1 disk handy...

It's bug ridden (as many have pointed out - I refer the reader to
the numerous other postings by individuals far more knowledgable than
myself).

Is it me or are CD-ROM's _s_l_o_w_...? Seems I wait 10-20 seconds
each time I 'browse' over to a file/folder on a CD...

Some positive comments:

It has more languages (O.K. NeXT - you went as far to make a
Swedish version, we have made by ourselves a Norwegian version
of 2.2 and were willing to make a 3.0 version also - just so
it exists! Why no interest? Refer to my posting from 6 months
ago and the host of answers from European users -
'A system often won't even be considered without localized
software and tools - we _need_ localized OS, Apps, etc!'
Reply: 'hear hear, absolutely, exacly the same here, etc etc'
from users all over Europe. At least you've started! Please
continue!

Upgrade was intelligently implimented (I hope - I haven't checked
all my directories yet...) and I really liked being able to edit
the Upgrade plan. It did choke when I didn't have enough disk
free to upgrade and I tried to remove files, as suggested.

Now for my questions ;-) :

Anyone on the FUN (Frame Users Net) heard of a fix for the Frame
crashes under 3.0??? Anyone else heard of a fix?

Why can I use CDPlayer as root, but as myself (wheel group) it
says 'can't find CD-ROM player' (or similar). CD is SCSI id 4,
boot disk (330) is 1 (if I remember right), and the OD isn't a
SCSI device.

I checked the /dev files - there isn't a rcd device. In CDPlayer
there's a file with /dev/rsd1h as the content - I checked the
permissions there and they are correct. The error message comes
from cdutil, which I haven't been able to locate yet (hey, I only
used 3.0 a half hour or so last night, O.K.?)

WM -> Disk -> eject is as fun as Russion Roulette, and about as
random. No big deal, of course, but slightly irritating. I'll
get the fix and see if it helps.

Well, that's it for now.

Do some timings, then a fresh virgin install, and tell us all how
much difference it makes.
If "Upgrade" causes slowness, then I would rather do it the hard way.

I just doubleclicked this in 2.1 and then clicked on "Make".
Boom! There I was looking at a Login window.
Perhaps that is why it is gone.

Using "Workspace" in 2.1, with the new CDROM driver and a Sun CDROM drive,
I copied the Q2 1992 Demo CDROM to an empty hard disk.
Both locally attached. After the copy:
/dev/rsd3h 630000 630000 0 100% /Q2_92_2 (CDROM)
/dev/sd1a 667719 292099 308848 49% /Q2_92 (HD)

It took 4 1/4 hours for the actual copy to start,
and another 20 hours before it was finished.
This does seem a tad slow.
