disappearing home icons?

I've had this peculiar problem at home, and haven't been able to figure it out. For one account on my NeXT, when I move the browser to other people's home directories, I get a folder icon, rather than the "multiple homes" icon. All of the other accounts seem to work correctly, just this one has the problem. What gives? Any ideas? On my system, this happens only for a 'guest' account, which I have
invalidated. It seems that if you don't have the correct home directory set for
the account, or it is invalidated, you get the folder icon. Do
nidump passwd .
to check.
Hope it helps,
Lga.

I even sent a bug report to NeXT about it giving, in great detail, the exact events which I thought had caused this behavior to start for my userid. Based on the above I poked around a bit, switching between accounts and playing with various defaults & stuff (via the DefaultMgr.app program available on various FTP archives). Turns out the answer is totally unrelated to the detailed explanation I gave NeXT. In the Preferences application, switch to the panel that is all the way to the right (the one for Unix expert preferences, the icon includes a ribbon-like thing). If you have set the preference "Large File System", then the Workspace will *-not-* display the double-home icons for other people's home directories. Apparently it assumes that "large file system" also means "large password file", and it doesn't want to keep track of the home directories of every user. I only have a few users on my system, but I had "Large file system" set because the machine is hooked up to the AFS world. -- Garance Alistair Drosehn = gad@eclipse.its.rpi.edu ITS Systems Programmer (handles NeXT-type mail) Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Troy NY USA

It happens on a network when a network wide user's account has a user id that is the same as a local user id. Check that the users id doesn't conflict with, say the localhost's "me" user, or other local (non-network wide) user. Use UserManager to check this. I neighbourhood is now in order... ...brad -- Bradley Head, bhead@hfs.questor.wimsey.bc.ca (NeXTmail :-) InStep Mobile Communications Inc., Vancouver, BC CANADA
