I've had an external disk on my machine for sometime ( HITACHI DK516C ). I've only used it for user and project directories, so the default one partition has been fine for me. Before I install 3.0 on my internal, I want to dual partition my external and install 2.1 on a 300 MB partition and use the other partition for the same thing the current one partition is used for. I have a few questions about doing this. First, In the disktab file there are no entries for hard disks and a little comment explaining that /usr/etc/disk and /usr/etc/builddisk can automatically figure out a disks geometry, so no disktab entry is required for one or two partitions. The builddisk man page seems to be missing from my system ( was it ever there? The newclient man page references it ), so I don't know how to do this. How do you do this, and can you specify the sizes of the partitions? Just by poking around it looks like this might work: /usr/etc/builddisk -p 330 -s /etc/BLD.sd330 /dev/rsd1a The "-p 330" assumes 1024K blocks, is this right. I remember a lot of discussion about 512K and 1024K block sizes. Second, If I end up having to write a disktab entry, were can I find a good book on how to do this kind of thing? BTW, will the following setup work? Three logical volumes: /dev/sd0a 3.0 root partition /dev/sd1a 2.1 root partition /dev/sd1b User and project directories Will /dev/sd1b be mountable if I boot from either 3.0 or 2.1? My main concern is that 3.0 might try to "update" /dev/sd1b making it unusable by the 2.1 system. Chris -- Christopher D. I remember a lot of >discussion about 512K and 1024K block sizes. Just in case anyone else was interested - I messed around with my hard disk this morning I got this to work. The command I used was: /usr/etc/builddisk -q -l System_2.1 -p 171090 sd1 The -s option is not needed and the -p option takes a number of 512 BYTE blocks ( not 1024 KByte blocks like I assumed ). The number I used is roughly 350MB with no unallocated sectors. This may have to be tuned for different disks, or just loose the sectors. Chris -- Christopher D.
