AppleTalk and 3.0. It does not work.

Has anyone got AppleTalk connections to work under 3.0?

We know the physical conncetion is ok, because we can
connect just fine with NCSA Telnet. We installed the
AppleTalk pkg., enabled AppleTalk Networking in the
Preferences panal, and rebooted.

Nothing shows up for our Mac running 7.0.

Is this supposed to work with the built in AppleShare of
7.0 or do you need the full blown installed AppleShare?

If we switch Networks on the Mac from EtherTalk to
standard AppleTalk, we see the server from other Macs,
but we can neither mount servers or see printerXT

Anybody got it working?

Neither have I yet succeeded in sharing files between the Mac's and the
NeXT, but I have gotten the NeXT to print to the Mac Printer. My
setup:

Etherprint Plus box, off which I hang a Mac+, a LaserWriter IINT,
and a PowerBook on the localtalk side. The Thinnet side of the
Etherprint Plus box goes to two MacII's (with Farallon ethernet cards),
a NeXT with its own printer, and an RS6000.

I am waiting on a repeater box for my connection to the outside world,
but at the moment I have an isolated net.

For the Mac II's and the NeXT I have specified ethertalk phase-1.
I further started up the network on the NeXT with the
"Simple Network Starter." I configured appletalk for ethertalk
phase 1 as discussed in the
docs, first the system, then the user part. Finally, I turned on
appletalk in Preferences.

The Mac's all have sharing turned on, and they all successfully share files with
each other, regardles of whether they are on the localtalk or the ethertalk
side of the EtherPrint box. All Mac's can print to the LaserWriter.

The NeXT prints to the LaserWriter as well as (natch) its own printer. However,
I cannot share the Mac II files to the NeXT. This I would like to do.

Of course, the Mac's cannot share the NeXT's files nor print to its
printer, but this I expected as the NeXT is only an Appletalk client.

Can anyone give me instructions on how to mount my Mac file systems on
the NeXT in this configuration?

I got it working first time, but I have not had time to run down all the
prooerties. I do, for example, see the hundreds of zones on our network
and can mount the file structure on my mac, and another one I have access
to. One interesting thing is that i get the entire file structure on my
hard disk, hot just the folder that is published under system 7.0.1 I also
had no problem installing my printer, after i found the correct driver,
since there are three. Bob

Test machine: NeXTstation (25MHz), 32MB RAM, nbuf=128

NetInfo options:
	AppleTalk
		Enabled YES
		AppleTalkPhase 1
		NetID [as assigned by administrator]
		NodeID 1
		ZoneName [as assigned by administrator]
	AppleTalk/AppleShare
		Enabled YES
		ResourceForks SHOWN
		CharacterEncoding MAC-ROMAN

Connections were made to both a dedicated AppleShare 2.0 server
and a Mac II running System 7.0 + TuneUp 1.1.1 + AppleTalk and
EtherTalk upgrades/fixes from Network Software Installer 1.2.2
(note that Apple released a newer version a few days ago). The
AppleShare server is on LocalTalk through a Shiva FastPath.
The 7.0 system was switchable between LocalTalk and EtherTalk
(Phase 1 and Phase 2, although I didn't try Phase 2).

+ All AppleTalk Zones were visible.
+ The NeXT took a noticeable amount of time to find all the nodes
  in a Zone.
+ New nodes would be discovered, but removed nodes would not be
  purged.
+ Attempts to log in as a Guest user usually failed with "Invalid
User Name or Password. Please try again." This was
repeatable. Curiously enough, after switching to "Registered
User" and clicking OK (which would, of course, fail), switching
back to "Guest" would work! (This was true for both AppleShare
  2.0 and System 7.0.)
+ It is not possible to provide authentication without the
NeXTSTEP Window Server running (for example, when logged onto
  the true console).
+ Machines whose names contained certain "high bit" characters
would be accessible through the browser, but not in either
  standard shell.
+ Shutting down file sharing resulted in NO notification to the
NeXT user! (Macs pop up an alert.)
+ There is no way to specify which volumes to mount; all
available are mounted, which may partially explain the lengthy
setup delay. Also, it seems to be necessary to manually
perform Update Viewers to make files appear (or browse
  elsewhere and come back).
+ There is no clear indication when a volume was not mounted due
  to lack of server permission.
+ The "Disconnect" option in AppleTalk Preferences sometimes
refused to work, even when no obvious file reference existed.
+ Logging out did not unmount AppleShare servers. Logging in
again would wedge the automounter resulting in NFS getattr
failures on terminals or a hopelessly hung Workspace when
attempting to browse AppleShare, making it impossible to log
out. (Reboot seems to be the best course of action here.)
+ The automounter didn't always dismount properly at shutdown,
with the message "CAUTION: some processes wouldn't die"
  appearing.

"Really looking forward to NeXTSTEP 3.1"
