Thanks, Louie, for the answer to my previous post:

I disabled expectation of a password in the login-unix.tcl script and
everything seems to work OK, except when I establish a connection from the
client I never receive a response for telnet, ping, etc. I can see the
modem sending the packets over the phone line, but the server never responds.
I'm also running into the following problems on the server side.

When rebooting my server (gandalf) with SLIP enabled in my rc.local file I get
the following message over and over (the loginwindow never appears):

Oct 5 09:43:07 loginwindow[230]: loginwindow: could not find WindowServer port!

Also, AppleShare will not mount in /Net (I get NFS errors).

I've checked (and double-checked) my host configuration and NetInfo is only
serving local. I do, however, have a default ethernet gateway set. My routing
table after booting looks like:

Routing tables
Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use Interface
localhost        localhost          UH          1      536  lo0
gandalf          localhost          UH          0        0  slip0
default          140.165.32.254     UG          2       17  en0
140.165          gandalf            U          37     1207  en0

Again, my entry in config.slip for the server is:

SLIP0LOCAL=140.165.32.59
SLIP0REMOTE=140.165.32.59
SLIP0NETMASK=255.255.255.0
SLIP0CONFIG=SLIP
SLIP0DEFAULT=NO

where 140.165.32.59 is the address of gandalf, the aspiring SLIP server.

When I disable SLIP and reboot, the AppleShare stuff mounts in /Net and the
loginwindow appears??
