Hi, I've been working on getting my single NeXT hooked up into my school's network. So far, I have been successful in getting telnet, rlogin, and ftp working from between the NeXT and local computers (Suns and Microvaxes). I can also send mail from the NeXT to the local computers. However, I can not access any computers outside of school (I get a Network unreachable message) and I can not send mail to the NeXT (I get an Unknown host error message when I send to it.) I have been told (with regards to the mail problem) that it might have to do with the I named the machine. It had been named just machine.smith.edu, but I was told it was supposed to be machine.csc.smith.edu. I changed this /etc/hosts file to the correct name, but things still aren't working. I also checked the sendmail.cf file, but things seem to be correct there. If any one has any suggestions on how to get both email working to the NeXT and how to get the NeXT to be able to access outside computers I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Check to see if the following line is in your /etc/hostconfig file. ROUTER=-ROUTED- (or ROUTER=address_of_router where address_of_router is a number) If not, modify your /etc/hostconfig file and then reboot. > and I can not send mail to the NeXT (I get an Unknown host error > message when I send to it.) I have been told (with regards to the mail If you are getting an "Unknown host error" on a machine trying to send to your NeXT, then that machine probably does not have a corresponding name/address for your NeXT in its /etc/hosts file or in the name servers tables. The machine sending mail needs to have the same name and address in its tables for your NeXT that your NeXT believes is its address. > > ... > > Carole > gitlin@sophia.smith.edu -- -Randy Nelson Workstation Support Manager Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Email: Randy.Nelson@Rose-Hulman.Edu "If it rains it pours; and if it doesn't, it wasn't important anyway."
