Help recovering damaged .tar file

Is there any way to do this? My .tar.Z file comes up with an
error halfway through:

Directory checksum:  1089 != 27893

or something like this (made up the numbers). Can I uncompress
the tar file and fix it somehow? (I just want to skip the bad
block or the bad file and read the rest of the files).

This came up while reading from a bad floppy... the file copies
but the data is corrupted. Is there a way to fix the floppy?
I tried running:

root% fsck /dev/fd0a

but this didn't seem to do anything.

Please email me with tips, suggestions or a step by step method

Thanks,
Veenu

I have used tar-mode.el for emacs to fix tar files. I forced a change to
each filename in the file, in dired mode, in order to cause emacs to
recalculate the checksums.

best of luck,
Christopher

Actually the problem is while uncompressing the file. Raw
'uncompress' on the file gives the following messages:

uncompress: corrupt input
memory allocation error: attempt to free or realloc space not in heap
bad zone

Is there anything anyone can do with this?
