/dev/cua is locked; how to unlock it?

I have a 32bis supra fax modem and am using ZyXEL fax driver.
After a couple of tries, it seemed to send a fax --- CD and FX
signs appeared on its display for a minute or so. Then, it
went into Auto Answer mode. The problem is that I cannot
reclaim the serial port. I rebooted the system while the modem is off.
(I took off the fax using PrintManager too, but still no effect.)
But, the serial port (/dev/cua or /dev/cufa) are busy.
I checked /usr/spool/uucp/LCK, but there was no lock file either.

How can I reclaim the serial port? Please reply to yu@cs.utexas.edu

Many thanks in advance.

Yeong,
I can't speak for the ZyXeL driver, but I can speak for DFax. This very
thing you mention (locking) is one of the things we've had to address, and one
of the things which have put us behind our originally targetted release date
for DFax - THE Fax/Data driver for the Supra.

Not only, does DFax not block other processes after sending a fax, it does
not block ANY access to the port while watching for incoming calls. It would
even be possible with the correct hardware to share the port with non-modem
hardware such as a tablet or digitzer, with DFax active!

As for suggestions -- probably the easiest method of regaining access to
your port ( for the lay user ) is to open an application already set to crack
such locks, like the Microphone II terminal program. Open the connecton to the
port, and OK the over-ride locks prompt.
